Back to Basics: Life and Education

Let children get closer to natures

Have we ever paused to ask ourselves: What is the purpose of life? And in living it, what do we truly need to learn?

When we reflect on these fundamental questions, we begin to see that education is not just about knowledge and exams, on the contrary,  it is about life itself.  It is about raising thoughtful, responsible, and resilient individuals who can navigate the challenges of an ever-changing world.

It is easy to teach a person, but it takes a lifetime to educate a responsible one.

From early childhood, every experience helps shape a person’s character. Undeniable, the warmth of parental love, the guidance of teachers, the influence of peers, and the moral values of the society they live in play the vital roles. Education, therefore, should not be seen as the sole duty of schools. It is a shared responsibility among the parents, teachers, and the community that working together to nurture balanced and compassionate human beings.

Today, the world moves at a rapid pace, driven by technology and social media. Children are constantly bombarded by endless streams of information, entertainment, and influence,  both positive and negative. Unlike the past, when technology was not so easily accessible, modern parents and teachers face the constant challenge of guiding children through this digital maze.

The impact of technology has silently crept into our daily lives. It has changed the way we think, communicate, and even perceive success. While digital literacy is important, learning how to use technology wisely is even more crucial. The first step, therefore, is to help children manage their use of digital devices not merely by strict prohibition, but through mindful guidance.

Encourage children to spend more time outdoors such as playing badminton, swimming, cycling, hiking etc.. These activities not only promote fitness but also teach teamwork, perseverance, and resilience. Parents can also involve children in simple household chores, which help instill responsibility, discipline, and practical life skills.

Equally important is family bonding time. Amid our busy schedules, we must not forget the importance of shared meals and family conversations. Even a simple dinner together can strengthen family ties and provide a safe space for children, especially teenagers to express themselves and feel understood.

Bringing children closer to nature is a vital and enriching step. Let them witness the wonders of the natural world such as the sunrise and sunset, the rhythm of ocean waves, the chirpings of birds, the blossoming of flowers, and the ever-shifting patterns of clouds above. These precious experiences cannot be learned from books, yet they cultivate essential values: an appreciation for life’s beauty, patience, resilience, and a deep sense of gratitude.

Knowledge from books helps one begin a journey, but it is life skills that learned through real experiences will determine how far and how well that journey goes.

It is time we return to the basics. Education must go beyond academics and technology. It must touch the heart, shape the character, and nurture the soul. Children should grow up not only to be knowledgeable but also kind, balanced, and resilient in order to get ready to face the complexities of life with strength and wisdom.

Let us bring back the joy of learning through play, exploration, and curiosity. Let us raise a generation that values simplicity, respect, and integrity amid a fast-paced digital age.

When we reconnect with life’s basics, we rediscover the essence of true education, the one that builds not just intelligent minds, but compassionate hearts.
