Children learn what they live

The recent 'Mat Lajak' incident which sentenced the clerk Sam Ke Ting to  6 years jail is not only a controversial issue but also a lesson to all of us as parents, teachers and department concerned to ponder in deliberation.

Children learn what they live

This reminds me the legacy in educating and parenting, Dorothy Law Notle and her most inspiring poem, " Children learn what they live".

The  first sight I came across the poem written by Dorothy Law Nolte , "Children learn what they live", was back to year 1991 when I was teaching in Miri, Sarawak. It reached me at the right time as I had just graduated as a fresh mathematics teacher.

I was deeply impressed every word asserted in this inspirational poem and it was the most powerful and effective guidelines for me, a new hand in teaching profession.

I read it repeatedly from time to time, reminding myself that to be a professional teacher,  we ought to understand our students before delivering the knowledge.

Yes, children learn what they live!

If a child lives with criticism,

He learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility,

He learns to violence.

If a child lives with ridicule,

He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame,

He learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with encouragement,

He learns to be confidence.

If a child lives with praise,

He learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness,

He learns justice.

If a child lives with security,

He learns faith.

If a child lives with approval,

He learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

He learns to love the world.

From my point of view,  this inspirational poem should be printed and displayed in the staff room for a reminder for all the teachers and guardians.

It could be a piece of advice to be shared with parents during the parents and teachers meetings and conversations.

Words from the parents or teachers may change a child's destiny. Do comprehend the core values of the poem and implement it in educating and parenting our children and future leaders.

Children learn what they live !

Parents are the first and best mentor to their children. Teach children do the right thing at the right time after all doing right thing is more important than doing things right in educating children.
