What truly brings us happiness

A couple of days ago, I came across a powerful video about happiness. Its message touched me profoundly and stirring not only personal reflections but also evoking thoughts of the tragic headlines we often read: suicides, kidnappings, senseless killings, and heartbreaking family tragedies.

What truly brings us happiness

These events made me question: Why is happiness so elusive, even in an era of abundance and advancement?

The Common Misconception

When we speak of happiness, we often picture luxury of grand homes, flashy cars, high-end gadgets, and exquisite meals. These desires reflect our wants more than our needs.

It’s common to admire and sometimes even envy those who seem to “have it all.” But is true happiness found in material possessions? Can wealth alone guarantee emotional fulfillment?

In truth, genuine happiness is a blend of three essential elements:

Enjoyment, Purpose, and Satisfaction.

Consider this: the thrill of buying a luxury car may last for a few days or weeks. But once the excitement fades, especially if the purchase strains your finances, it may lead to stress instead of joy. That’s because true happiness is not about what you possess, but how those things make you feel, why you pursue them, and whether they leave you truly content.

The Fleeting Four: Short-Term Sources of Joy

Certain things can bring happiness but often only temporarily. These include:

1. Money

While money can solve many problems, its source matters. Ill-gotten wealth brings anxiety and consequences. On the other hand, money earned through hard work and integrity brings peace of mind and long-term satisfaction.

2. Power

The desire for control whether in families, communities, organizations, or governments can easily spiral into obsession. Power without restraint can lead to corruption, destruction, and personal downfall.

3. Pleasure

We all enjoy good food, entertainment, travel, and luxury. But when indulgence becomes habit, pleasure turns into dependency. The more we feed our cravings, the more insatiable they become.

4. Fame

Recognition is a natural desire. But too much focus on fame can bring constant pressure, anxiety, and burnout. It’s important to balance public success with private peace.

The Enduring Four: Foundations of True Happiness

Unlike the fleeting four, there are four enduring elements that consistently nurture deep and lasting happiness:

1. Faith

Faith gives us strength when facing hardship. Whether spiritual or philosophical, it offers a guiding light in the darkest times. With faith, we find courage, clarity, and calm.

2. Family

A supportive family is a foundation of love, care, and belonging. Mutual respect among family members regardless of age creates a nurturing environment where happiness can flourish.

3. Friends

True friends bring joy, support, and perspective. Surround yourself with those who uplift you, and distance yourself from those who drain your energy or contribute negativity.

4. Work

Engaging in meaningful, purpose-driven work contributes greatly to our emotional well-being. A positive and appreciative workplace fosters motivation, growth, and fulfillment.

A Daily Practice for a Happier Life

Happiness isn’t a destination but it’s a practice. Each day, ask yourself:

What brought me enjoyment today? What gave my actions purpose? What made me feel truly satisfied?

By consistently aligning your haves with your wants, and your values with your actions, you’ll move steadily toward a life that is not only successful but truly happy.
