With a series of shocking incidents occurring within school compounds, the place that is meant to be a second home, a nurturing environment for learning and growth now seems increasingly unsafe for our children.

The heart-wrenching cases of bullying, gang assaults, and even mysterious murders have raised alarming awareness that education should not be confined to producing academically excellent and high-performing elites. Rather, it must focus on cultivating students with emotional intelligence, resilience, empathy, and moral grounding which considered as the essential traits for adapting to today’s complex and challenging world.
Children today are widely exposed to social media and the internet at an early age. For some busy or overwhelmed parents, mobile phones have become a convenient replacement for parental care and companionship. The lack of proper guidance and supervision over digital usage can, however, lead to devastating consequences for young minds.
To mitigate the negative impact of social media and create a safer environment, governments, schools, parents, and communities must work hand in hand. In my opinion, the following measures could be crucial steps forward:
1. CCTV installation and monitoring.
Installing CCTV cameras at strategic and less noticeable areas such as corridors, school entrances, libraries, and outside toilets, acts as both a deterrent and an investigative tool. It can serve as a warning to potential offenders and help maintain discipline at school compound.
2. Regular spot checks and patrols.
Frequent random inspections of schoolbags and classrooms by discipline teachers or police officers can help detect prohibited items early and reduce the risk of violent incidents or weapon attacks in schools.
3. Reinstating appropriate disciplinary actions.
When counseling and warnings fail, suitable disciplinary measures must be executed to cease persistent misbehavior. These actions should be implemented wisely and fairly by the disciplinary board. If situations spiral out of control, stricter enforcement may be necessary to restore order and safety.
4. Equality and inclusivity for all students.
Every child deserves equal treatment regardless of race, religion, culture, or socioeconomic background. A harmonious and respectful school environment fosters belonging and builds emotional stability. Children should love going to school, not only to learn, but also to share experiences and build friendships that strengthen their emotional growth.
5. Parental love and guidance
Parents are a child’s first teachers. Children mirror what they observe at home. Recognizing that every child is unique, parents should provide unconditional and genuine love, understanding, firm yet flexible guidance. Freedom with clear boundaries helps protect them from harmful peer influences.
6. Positive national advocacy
The government should leverage social media to promote messages such as Happy Family, Harmonious Schools, and Caring Society. Once positive thoughts are rooted in the public mindset, they influence our words, shape our actions, form our habits, build our character — and ultimately determine our nation’s destiny.
We may not be able to decide every child’s destiny, but we share a collective responsibility as parents, teachers, policymakers, and citizens in raising our young with care, safety, and wisdom.
After all, our children are the leaders of tomorrow, and the destiny of Malaysia rests in their hands!
